1. FOOTBALL KEEPS STREAK ALIVE

The Sequoit varsity football team improved to 5-0 with a 49-14 victory over Grayslake Central High School on Friday night. The team opened the game up with a 35-0 lead at halftime. Antioch will play at Round Lake next Friday.

2. JOLIE, PITT DIVORCE AFTER TWO YEARS

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, one of Hollywood’s biggest couples, filed for divorce last Monday. The couple, while only officially married in 2014, were rumored to be in a relationship since 2004. Both have focused on protecting the privacy of their six children in recent days.

3. MULTIPLE POLICE SHOOTINGS SPARK PROTESTS

A police shooting in Charlotte of a local African-American man preceded days of protests in the city. The man, Keith Lamont Scott, did not appear to be holding a weapon, although a handgun was found in the vehicle he was in. A similar shooting in Tulsa earlier this month has added to tension across the country.

4. FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE ON MONDAY NIGHT

After multiple years of campaigning, the first presidential debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump will take place Monday night. It will be the first time the candidates publicly debate each other.

5. SHOOTING IN MALL LEAVES WASHINGTON IN SHOCK

A lone gunman opened fire in a mall north of Seattle on Friday night, killing five. The only suspect, Arcan Cetin, was arrested following a day-long manhunt late Saturday. Cetin is a Turkish immigrant and permanent U.S. citizen. No motive has been established.

6. MARLINS STAR KILLED IN ACCIDENT

Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. Fernández, a Cuban who defected to the United States in 2008, was among the elite young talents in the league. He was just 24.

7. SUSPECT IN NEW YORK BOMBING CAPTURED

Ahmad Khan Rahami is the main suspect in a string of terror cases, including a bombing in New York that injured 31 earlier this month. Rahami is suspected of being influenced by ISIS, though is a U.S. citizen.

8. SEQUOIT PRIDE 5K APPROACHES FAST

The early sign up for the second annual run, which supports the parent booster club, ends this Tuesday. Early applications are guaranteed a shirt and receive five dollars off the regular price of the event.

9. GOLF LEGEND ARNOLD PALMER DIES

Arnold Palmer, known as “The King” in the golf world, passed away at 87 on Sunday. Palmer won 91 tournaments in his career, including 62 on the PGA Tour. Palmer’s charm and friendly personality helped increase golf’s popularity in the early 1960s.

10. CUBS CLINCH HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

The Chicago Cubs are putting on a historic season; their 98th win of the season on Friday secured home field advantage through the playoffs. The Cubs are favorites to win the World Series this year. They have not won the World Series since 1908.
