There has been a lot of talk about the new changes to the food and allergy policies within the District 117 schools. The policy changes include an addition of disinfectant wipes in classrooms, no food distribution by teachers during classes and strict, designated eating areas. Although the district is putting forth effort to maintain healthy and safe, “food free” classroom environments, many students disagree with the abrupt change.

“Not being able to eat in most classrooms is unfair as there has been no outrageous problems with allergies in the past three years I have been coming here,” senior Desi Davis said.  “I understand allergies are a dangerous matter, but we are old enough to know what to stay away from.”

But not everyone feels the same way about the new policy updates. School nurse Wanda Sobczak and many others believe that these changes are beneficial to our school environment.

“Any opportunity to make the school safer for any student is always a positive change.” Sobczak said.

Regardless of the strong opinions given by students and staff towards the newly enforced regulations, the rules are here to stay in order to keep a safe learning environment within the school.
