Keys to Keep Nails Healthy

Simple ways to keep nails looking healthy and beautiful.

Spring is coming, and the temperature is about ready to free our hands from winter gloves. One major drawback of the cold weather is the poor conditions for healthy nails. However, there are many ways to replenish nails just in time for the change in weather.

One way to keep nails in good shape is by making sure they stay moisturized. This prevents nails from easily chipping and drying out. Another method is ensuring that the cuticle area is well trimmed and nourished using cuticle cutters so that nails have room to grow. When nails need to be grown out long, using a nail growth solution will help ensure growth that keeps the nails strong.

Nails are also usually more healthy when they are not continuously painted, and exposed to nail polish remover. This allows the nails to breathe and regain the nutrients they lose from the nail polish remover. Make sure there is no dirt underneath the nails to keep bacteria from growing underneath. Over-cleaning nails can also lead to infection, so there is no need to constantly go get a manicure.

“I like to file down my nails, because when I just use clippers, they might leave the nail all rigid,” junior Sally Bessette said.

“To keep them healthy, I drink a lot of water, plus I make sure to moisturize,” senior Caitlin Baratti said.

“‘In fact,’ says dermatologist D’Anne M. Kleinsmith, MD, of the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., ‘being overly aggressive with cleaning and maintaining nails might actually put your normally strong nails at risk for yeast or bacterial infections,’” Everyday Health said.
