Nicolas Garcia goes up against rival team Wauconda in the regionals meet, which he lost 9-5.

On Saturday, February 4, the Antioch wrestlers traveled out to Grayslake Central for the regional wrestling tournament. Although the wrestling team as a whole did not end up qualifying to move on to sectionals, as a team they put up 162 points, falling short behind Wauconda, their biggest rival with 200 points.

Out of eight other teams, the six wrestlers who qualified on Saturday will now compete at sectionals, then hopefully move on to state. Seniors Patrick Schoenfelder and George Bessette, junior Daeshaun Williams, sophomores Michael Volkmar and Xavier Sanchez and freshman Alexander Barbarise are the six sectional qualifiers.

Although he did not qualify, sophomore Jackie Sistrunk is still very proud of his teammates and their success but also is weary of their mistakes and hopes it won’t affect their performance moving forward.

“Overall we did a solid job,” Sistrunk said. “But there were still a lot of upsets, and towards the end we lost a lot of matches. It was just an off day for a lot of us, and we simply just got outwrestled towards the end of the tournament.”

The six wrestlers who placed on Saturday are hopeful to move on successfully during sectionals later this month.
