On Feb. 5, the National Collegiate Athletics Association had one of multiple commitment signing dates and Antioch Community High School had three athletes signing national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the college level.

Senior Ashley LaPointe signed with Lindenwood University to run cross country and track at the Division II level. LaPointe, captain of both track and cross country last year and this year, was also named an all conference runner at the Northern Suburban Conference meet, a long-time goal of hers. This accomplishment has only strengthened her desire to succeed at the college level.

“I’m just excited to see what’s in store for me, because I know my limits haven’t been pushed yet,” said LaPointe.

Cross country and track coach, Christopher Bailey, sees LaPointe as a promising college athlete.

“She’s talented, she’s got the ability to go on and do some great things. I don’t think we saw the best of her in high school, I think she’s got more to give, so I’m excited to see what she does in college,” Bailey said. He also mentioned how her passion for running was infectious to the rest of the team.

LaPointe is the first female cross country runner to sign with a college since Erin Poss in 2010.

Signing day was also a big day for senior football players Tyler Lazarz and Nate Zeien.

Lazarz, who played tight end on varsity and made 17 catches this season for more than 200 receiving yards, signed his letter of intent with Division II Minnesota State University Moorhead. After taking a visit last month and meeting with coaches and players he decided that there was no other place for him.

“Over the past 18 months I have developed a great relationship with the coaching staff,” said Lazarz.

Lazarz was a starter on the varsity team his junior and senior year.

“Being able to be a two year starter on the varsity level has given me a great opportunity to not only show my school and community what I can do, but also interest coaches at a college level,” said Lazarz. “Coach Glashagel has helped me significantly throughout the whole recruiting process. He started by sending my highlights to nearby colleges.”

Although he plans to red shirt his freshman year at Moorhead due to recent shoulder surgery, he is excited to see what Moorhead has in store for him. He will spend his first year weight training and learning the playbooks.

Offensive lineman Nate Zeien signed his letter of intent with Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He couldn’t be happier to have signed with Division I school.

“I see myself doing very well at Drake because I chose to take the hard way or as you say the road less traveled and have chosen to push myself at the highest level in order to succeed,” said Zeien.

Zeien and Lazarz started their football careers in Vikings Youth Association football league in grade school.

“It ultimately got me hooked on the game of football and I learned and got so good at the game that it made me want to continue to play,” said Zeien.

Senior volleyball players Samantha Falco and Elena Kelsh also signed their letters of intent earlier in the winter. Falco signed with Eastern Michigan University and Kelsh signed with University of St. Francis in Joilet, Ill.
