REVIEW: Why We Broke Up

“Either you have the feeling or you don’t,” but you’ll have the feelings for every word of the book Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler.

“Every breakup starts with a love story” is not only a quote from the award winning novel, but also something to keep in mind while in high school. The novel Why We Broke Up is a high school love story with an unexpected twist.

In high school, all relationships consist of cute, small crushes that constantly come tumbling down. In this novel, there are many twists that are not seen in the average love story from a 16-year-old‘s perspective. If you’re looking for another “girl falls in love with boy with cancer” story, that era is over. This book is the bittersweet reality of what really goes on in a relationship.

When reading the novel, the reader can do nothing but relate this relationship to his or her own. In the novel, high school juniors Min and Ed fall head over heels for each other. But the twist is that each picture in the novel tells a reason of why Min and Ed broke up.

Each chapter starts with a picture and the story behind it, leaving one to wonder why someone could possibly break up over something as small as a movie ticket. Your heart will pound with each word of the story that you read because of how accurate it is to your own love story.

Why We Broke Up is filled with love as well as resentment, but then again, isn’t that what break ups consist of?

Take a journey into words that leave a breakup seeming like your own.
