Facebook Food Hacks: Benefit or Blunder?

It’s time to finally put those thirty second “Tasty” videos to the test.

Anyone with a Facebook account is likely to encounter a short Buzzfeed, Tasty, or other cooking video. These videos make it seem like every single recipe is incredibly simple to recreate, so I decided to test out one of their most popular videos, “The Easiest Way to Make Ice Cream.” Ice cream is a classic dessert; why not try to make it on my own?

According to the video, the only ingredients needed are heavy whipping cream and sweet condensed milk. It seemed pretty simple to me. The instruction was to use a hand mixer to mix the heavy whipping cream until it soft peaks were formed. In the video, it looked like it only took a couple of minutes, but reality was different. It took about 20 minutes with the hand mixer on the highest speed to get one pint of whipping cream to form soft peaks.

Once that was finally done, it was time to add the condensed milk, and mix those together. To make things even more fun, when they initially mixed, all those soft peaks I spent twenty minutes making, completely reversed; so I had to spend an additional 30 minutes trying to get the original consistency back.

After spending almost an hour on the first two steps, it was time to add in the flavouring. I added cocoa powder by the tablespoon until I got it to where it looked like it could taste good. The last step was to freeze it.

After freezing for eight hours, the ice cream was ready. It was finally time to taste it. I was hoping that after all of this it would be delicious and all that work would’ve been worth it, but it sadly wasn’t. I’ll admit, the first couple bites weren’t that bad, but then it started to melt, and turned back into the thick consistency it was before, and it was no longer good.

It ended up working for me, but the thirty second video does not show that it actually takes about an hour to just mix the two ingredients. I was able to make ice cream this way, but it is in no way worth it. Do yourself a favor and go to the store to get ice cream.
