When the objective is to chase down tennis balls, what better ball boy is there than a dog?

A ball retrieval dog returns a ball at last year’s Brazil Open.

For the second year in a row, the Brazil Tennis Open will be bringing back canines to serve as the ball boys throughout the tournament. Other than the sheer entertainment of watching a dog chase a tennis ball, their participation in the event has a bigger purpose.

All of the dogs involved in the event were rescued from abandonment or abusive situations and are looking for new homes. Although they may come from difficult environments, these dogs are ready to find a new place to call home.

“They are dogs that have had difficulties in life, yes. But what we want to show is not the stories suffered in the past, rather to prove that, regardless of what they’ve experienced, they can be great companions today and in the future!” organizer Madalena Spinazzola stated in a release.

Due to last years exposure of the dogs in the tournament, their lives have changed for the better. Every single dog shown in last year’s tournament was adopted. The organization hopes that this year will be no different, and that every dog will find a home.
