Released to the box offices on September 18, 2015, the second installment in James Dashner’s series, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, makes a huge smash in the film industry, taking over the first spot during opening weekend. Based in a world full of poverty and destruction, the Scorch Trials, similar to other dystopian sci-fi stories, *cough* Hunger Games *cough*, includes an infamous good-looking lead (Dylan O’Brien), a confusing teenage relationship, and an abundance of explosions. Throw in the zombie-like “Cranks” and an evil government, and the film becomes another movie soon to be thrown onto the shelf, forgotten until it’s third installment projected to release February of 2017.
Full of action and by-the-minute jump scares, Scorch Trials lives up to its predecessor’s success in the CGI department. O’Brien, in an interview with PopSugar, states, “To be honest, speaking frankly, we don’t have the budget of Divergent or The Hunger Games. We don’t have the marketing, and it’s not in everyone’s face like that. I think the only reason we caught some people’s attention was because it’s cool. We made it really special, I think”. Even with a low tech budget, 20th Century Fox pulls off another film that interests both the teenage fangirl audience, along with the average movie viewer. The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials is currently showing at the Antioch Theater till the end of the week.
