The self-proclaimed ‘”electro hip pop dub-something” sensation Timeflies performed at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, Ill. on Oct. 11, and did not fail to rock the house. The duo, which consists of lead singer Cal Shapiro and DJ Rob “Rez” Resnick, has been making music since 2010, after meeting in college. Timeflies originally made a name for themselves by their infamous YouTube “Timeflies Tuesdays” videos, which include remixes, freestyling and live covers. After several mixtapes and EPs (extended play albums), Shapiro and Resnick released their newest album, “After Hours,” in April 2014, and the two have been skyrocketing to fame ever since.

As for the concert itself, the show was phenomenal to say the least. The atmosphere of the Riviera Theatre may be small and a bit cramped, but it allowed for an up close concert experience. Small stages always seem to make concerts much more personal. The show started at 7:30 p.m. with the first openers, the Canadian rap/rock band Down With Webster. The act itself wasn’t terrible, but seemed a bit out of place from the style of music in the rest of the concert. Luckily, the second opening act, KapSlap, set the mood for Timeflies and pumped the crowd up with about an hour of DJ-ing and dancing.

Timeflies finally took the stage at 9 p.m., and it was well worth the wait. Shapiro proved to be not only an amazing singer and rapper, but also a natural performer and entertainer. The duo performed their popular hits such as ‘All The Way’ and ‘SMFWU,’ and also threw in some throwbacks of their older music like ‘Adderal & Redbull’ and ‘For You.’ Shapiro mentioned that these songs were “for the fans that had been there from the beginning, since ‘The Scotch Tape’ [Timeflies’s first album, released in 2011].” One of the most unique parts of Timeflies’ concerts is when the audience tweets topics to Shapiro, and he freestyles about the topics right on the spot.

The lights, the music, the dancing and the two very talented performers made for an amazing concert. Timeflies is the type of group that leaves you wanting to come watch them again and again. After having seen them 3 times, I can assure you I will be buying tickets once again the next time they come to Chicago.
