Aaron Helt: Leading with Skill and Spirit

What started as a family activity at a bowling alley became a competitive passion for senior Aaron Helt. Bowling became an important part of Helt’s life early on, as it was an affordable activity that his family enjoyed playing together. While Helt’s siblings were less interested in the sport, it stood out to him as exciting and engaging.

When a bowling team was introduced to Antioch Community High School, Helt was eager to join, despite doubts about his skills compared to those of others. What motivated Helt to compete at a high school level was the sense of teamwork and working towards a shared goal with others facing similar challenges, which made bowling all the more meaningful.

Helt’s preparation and mindset played a huge role in his success. Before tournaments, he would warm up with strike throws to build comfort, then focus on aiming for specific pins to practice difficult shots. One of Helt’s proudest moments came earlier this season, when he scored over 200 points in every game at a tournament, a remarkable feat for a high school athlete. When performance falls short, Helt reflects on the matches, identifies what needs improvement and plans what to practice next, which helps rebuild his confidence for future matches. Helt’s long-term goal is to stay motivated and keep improving in both career and bowling.

Advice I would give new bowlers is to have a growth mindset, not to dwell on what goes wrong, and to look at what you can change and adjust, because you can’t change without fail,” Helt said.

A teammate of Helt’s, senior Broden Struab, recalls his first time meeting Helt, stating that he was a little worried about making a good first impression, but he quickly got comfortable. From the start, Struab noticed that Helt was not only clearly skilled but also an excellent varsity captain who genuinely cares about the people around him. Struab points out that Helt constantly works on improving his bowling and also takes the time to make sure everyone else is having a positive experience.

What really stands out to Struab is Helt’s ability to balance skill with support. At tournaments, no matter how the team is performing, Helt keeps everyone motivated and in high spirits. He is always willing to help, whether that is with giving tips or techniques or just checking in with someone. Straub shares that being on a team with Helt has improved his bowling and taught him a lot. Helt’s focus and positivity help Struab stay present and give his best even when times get challenging. Struab believes Helt has a lot of potential going forward in bowling and in life as a whole.

“At tournaments, no matter how badly we are doing, he always does his best to keep us all motivated and in high spirits,” Struab said. “He always wants to make everybody feel better, and he also does a great job at bowling; his averages are always high.”

Another teammate of Helt’s is junior Kellen Guy, who first met Helt in his freshman year and quickly became close friends with him because of Helt’s friendly personality. From the beginning, Guy realized that Helt was a very talented bowler and someone who lifts the spirits of everyone around him. Guy emphasized that Helt always cheers for teammates, congratulating them with a smile, whether they are doing well or struggling.

Helt’s dedication is clearly shown as he comes to practice early every day and is often one of the last to leave. Helt constantly works to improve his own game while also supporting others.

One of the things Guy really admires about Helt is that he celebrates small victories with his teammates, giving fist bumps and offering words of encouragement after a good ball or strike. Being on the team with Helt has taught Guy perseverance and how to support others while working on themselves. As this being Helts last year on the team, Guy shares that Helt plans to go to college and continue bowling for fun or with friends.

“With every bad ball Aaron throws, he doesn’t pout or feel disappointed in himself instead, he looks on how to change his shot to make it better,” Guy said. “I feel like this helps me push on to fix my mistakes and focus on what’s to come instead of what’s already happened.”

Helts success comes from far more than talent; it shows his dedication, positivity and support for his teammates that truly stand out. Helt inspires others to improve, stay motivated and face challenges with perseverance. As Helt moves forward to college, his high spirits and lessons he has shared will leave a lasting impact both in and out of the alley.
