On March 16, the night was bitter as gust of wind bellowed across the playing filed. At 7 p.m. the girls varsity soccer faced Grayslake North Knights. After exhausting battles and plenty of opportunities, the match concluded in a 2-2 tie.

“It was a big game for us, we knew everyone was watching , so we knew we had to take care of business,” said varsity defender Karly Monaco.

Midway through the first half senior captain Courtney Coleman shocked Grays Lake as she nailed the ball over North’s goal keeper putting Antioch on the score bored. The senior striker Coleman passed by two of Knights defenders and then delivered her shot from over 20 yards out.  The score stayed 1-0 Antioch for the rest of the half.

“We knew the goal was a bad mistake but we had to get over it. Our hearts and minds were in the game so we pushed ourselves on” said Monaco.

Although the Sequoits held the lead, North proved the game was far from over. Within the first minute of the second half, North’s center forward intercepted a rolled out ball and was able to find the back of the net. Score now, all tied up 1-1. After countless opportunities from both teams, Antioch came up on top.  From a difficult side angle, junior striker Megan Helgesen sunk the ball deep into North’s net.

With under 10 minutes left in the game, The Knight’s attack broke down the Sequoit’s defense and scored a devastating goal to tie the game up. After several close calls from both teams, the game concluded in a 2-2 tie.

“We played well and at the end we knew that we tried our hardest and played our best” said sophomore striker Rachel Moore.

The girls gave it there all and unfortunately came up short but will use the game experience to learn and improve for the future.

The girls play next against Vernon Hills on Tuesday, March 29 at Vernon Hills.
