Antioch’s atypical pets

These Antioch students do not have what most would call a “typical pet.” When most people think of pets, they think of a cat, a dog or maybe even a fish, but those with the unordinary animals are often overlooked.

The title of “pet” is typically given to cute and cuddly animals, but whether it be a dog or a pig, a cat or a bearded dragon, these students love them all the same.

Senior Jenna Lamberty has seven pets–not including her 14 fish. Out of her seven, there is one that stands out: Melvin, a bearded dragon.

“Melvin is a girl [who’s] one year old and is super friendly and playful,” Lamberty said. “She loves to rest on people’s shoulders, run around and bask in her sun lamp.”

Melvin is not very comparable to a typical dog or cat because she requires more specific maintenance, but Lamberty loves Melvin dearly.

Another student with an odd pet is junior Allison Curry. Her pet Pickles is a one-year-old pig who has a personality as big as he is. Curry’s entire family loves Pickles as he is one of three family pets.

“Pickles loves to eat food, play in the mud, take naps and cuddle,” Curry said. “He’s a lot like a dog; Pickles and my dog, Rocky, get along very well and love to play with one another.”

Pickles is allowed in the house, and he is even potty trained to use the bathroom outside. He often jumps up on the couch to get his dosage of cuddling with the family.

Junior Carissa Lozano also has a fun, playful and unusual pet named Diego.

“Diego is a ferret,” Lozano said. “He loves to lay, cuddle and run really fast around his cage.”

Diego is an amusing ferret, as he loves attention, playing with Lozano’s cat and even eating the cat food. Sometimes, though, he reverts to isolation.

“Diego loves to hide in dark places, so sometimes we will find him in my drawers just chilling,” Lozano said.

Diego tends to get excited as well, and he begins to run diagonally; if excitement and playfulness take over, then he will often get so crazy and tired that he will suddenly stop, fall and take a nap right where he is.

No matter the species, one thing is clear: these students adore their pets. While they may not be the typical house pet, they all have personalities and are there to be loved and give love.
