Over the last couple of years Antioch Community High School has been purchasing iPads and Chromebooks to give students better accessibility to technology. ACHS may be increasing the accessibility once again with the One-to-One Model.

The One-to-One Model is a classroom model in which each student is given a device to use for educational purposes whether that be researching, writing essays or collaborating on a presentation. Students and teachers would be able to work together faster and more efficient in the classroom.

Chief Technology Officer Ryan Miles said, “I believe that a 1-to-1 model is a logical next step for schools today.” He has high hopes that the district will bring more technology to the classroom but warns that technology should only be used as a tool.

“But, you have to keep in mind that technology is just a ‘tool.’  The tools that we have at our disposal will change over time and they have been changing faster and faster in the last few years.” He also went on to note that the district will have to be careful in its choice of device because mobile computing updates very quickly.

Some of the issues that could arise from the One-to-One Model include capacity on the wireless network, response to dead batteries or broken devices and how will the model be funded.

Miles also stated that, “Our district has a core belief that the most important resource students have access to in the classroom is the teacher.  Technology cannot replace a good teacher.” These devices would only aid teachers in the learning environment and will never be able to replace teachers. Adding technology will give teachers extra time to prepare assignments, grade tests and better help students.

With many students bringing their own devices to school, this transition to the One-to-One Model can be very seamless and fun.
