James Charles began his career as an aspiring makeup artist on Instagram. The seventeen year old instantly became a hit, gaining 400,000 followers within a year. On his Instagram, @jamescharles, he posts pictures of his incredible makeup skills. His skill level ranges from crazy, special effects to flawless makeup looks. He quickly became a viral sensation when he took his senior photos not once, but twice, just to make sure his highlight was perfect.

As a senior in high school, he can now add to his list of accomplishments being the first male CoverGirl in the brand’s 58 years. Charles is making beauty history, as he joins Katy Perry in promoting new products. Charles will not only promote the brand, but he will also appear in TV, print and digital campaigns.

CoverGirl’s announcement is huge, because it promotes the fact that makeup isn’t gender-exclusive and inspires young teens who feel they can’t follow their dreams due to society’s gender norms. James Charles is making a major breakthrough in today’s society.

“All of our Cover Girls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful. James Charles is no exception,” CoverGirl explained in a press conference on why Charles was such a perfect choice for them.

Having a well-known, popular makeup brand promote both genders in makeup will hopefully open up society’s eyes to see that makeup is “one size fits all.”

James Charles will start his campaign by appearing in a commercial for the brand’s new “So Lashy” mascara. Charles is making history by being an inspiration for young boys and girls looking to pursue makeup as a career, as he continues to tear down the norms society has put up for both genders.
