When people think of high school, they imagine it straight out of the movies, but in reality, everyone has a different experience. Many incoming freshmen may see high school as intimidating and alarming, while others are excited for the next step in life. Although taking this big jump may be a scary thought, each and every individual has to make their own path in high school. Preparing for high school can be an emotional rollercoaster; taking new and harder courses, meeting new people, trying new things and branching out from past friendships.
“Leading up to high school I was really scared,” Freshman Adelyn Koesser said. “I was super nervous I wouldn’t have friends in my classes.”
High school is all about stepping out of the comfort zone and trying new things whether it is in a new class or getting extra help. Enrolling in clubs, sports, or other activities throughout high school may be a big change at first. Freshman Tanner Ludwig joined flag football this past fall, managing both athletics and academics.
“Joining sports for me was very academically challenging at first,” Ludwig said. “As a freshman I didn’t know what to expect out of a high school sport.”
There are many positive things that come out of pursuing interests besides school that can impact individuals in the classroom. For example, it improves concentration, brings more motivation and teaches better time management.
“In the end, being a student-athlete makes my high school experience so much better,” Ludwig said. “I get to meet so many new people and new teammates.”
The thought of what high school may be like is not always the reality. Transitioning into a new environment, like going from middle school to high school, is a huge stride in life that comes with a lot of ups and downs. Each step will lead to a new path or adventure that shapes the outcome of one’s high school experience and how they choose to pursue life after.
