Girls Tennis is off to a great start by taking first place at the Niles West Invite on Aug. 30.

Freshman Kelsey Neville managed to snag second place in No. 1 singles only losing to Eliza Kirov of Niles West who went to state the previous year as a freshman. Losing both sets a long the way, Neville stayed strong and proved that she should not be overlooked.

At the No. 2 singles spot, Senior Maddie Brost fell in the championship match. However, she still was able to beat Resurrection and Lane Tech’s No. 2 singles.

Over at the No. 1 doubles spot, Juniors Anna Arden and Annie Horner also had a winning record, placing them in the championship match. However, Timothy Christian was able to pull out the win only after a third set tie break.

Fortunately the Sequoits did have players win in an event. Sophomores Elizabeth Gardner and Emma DeJong beat out everyone to pull of the first place finish. They managed to beat host Niles West, Timothy Christian and North Shore Country Day.

Even with the second place finishes, the Sequoits had enough wins to beat Niles West for the team championship.

Come support the Sequoits at Zion-Benton on Tuesday, Sept. 2 in hopes of adding another win.
