Hidden Rooms in ACHS?

Kristina Esdale, Editor-in-Chief

There have been many rumors about Antioch Community High School throughout its 100 years; mysterious sightings, haunted bathrooms and one that can be proven to be true: secret sections and rooms that most students and staff are unaware of.

ACHS is one of the oldest schools in Lake County. One of the biggest events in history that this country has been through is World War 2. ACHS has remnants of WW2 hidden within the school.

Math teacher William Zambole said, “A lot of people don’t know that underneath the math hallway is a basement that is not accessible to students. It’s a basement that used to be a bomb shelter during World War 2. It’s only about five feet tall. We don’t use it anymore; it’s used to access all of the furnace pipes.”

Teachers seem to know all of the more interesting hidden spaces, but students are also aware of secret passageways throughout the school.

“Behind all of the stairwells at school, mostly in the science hallways, you can get into the basement and also underground,” said junior Brandon Dade.

Not many schools can say that they have secret passages and hidden underground bomb shelters. Antioch may be old, but with many years comes a lot of interesting history.
