“A town, a team, a dream”

The 1988 Permian High School Panthers’ football team in Texas has a promising year to look forward to. With one of the best players in the nation on their team, James “Boobie” Miles, there is no reason why they cannot win the Texas 5a state championship. But after game one, their season takes a turn for the worst.

At the end of game one, Boobie is injured and out for the season. Almost the whole town turns on coach and thinks the team is done for. With much hope lost, the team pulls it together and steps up their game without their key player who tries to make a comeback; but just injures himself more. The team fights hard all season long with much drama to make it to the semifinal game against the big time school Dallas Carter.

With the semifinal game not going the way they’d hope, the Panthers fall short to the soon to be state champs Dallas Carter. Later down the road it turns out that Dallas Carter cheated by playing ineligible players and much more.

Although things may be upsetting, everything happens for a reason. The following year, the team overcomes their past and the Permian Panthers are the 1989 undefeated Texas 5a state champs.

By far one of the greatest books I’ve ever read with a great, true story that I would recommend to anyone. Not only is it an amazing book, but a great movie and a phenomenal TV series.
