Action, suspense, comedy and a very handsome main character. What more could you ask for in a science fiction thriller? “The Maze Runner,” directed by Wes Ball, brings you all that and more.

“The Maze Runner” is a film based off the first book in James Dashner’s “The Maze Runner Series,” written in 2009. The movie begins when the main character, Thomas, played by “Teen Wolf”  star Dylan O’Brien, wakes up in a strange freight elevator, and cannot remember a single thing about his life, not even his own name. Thomas soon discovers that wherever he is, there are dozens of boys just like him. They call themselves The Gladers, and they know not much more than their names, and the fact that they are trapped within the stone walls of an enormous maze, some of them for three years now. The eldest veteran of this strange society, Alby, played by Aml Ameen, takes Thomas under his wing and explains to him all he knows about their mysterious situation;

First, that every month a new boy is brought up in the elevator along with supplies, and each month the newest boy remembers absolutely nothing.

Second, no one knows how or why the boys got here.

And lastly, that the only way out is through the giant dangerous maze, which elites called ‘The Runners’ try to map out every single day, in hopes of finding an escape route.

While most of The Gladers seem to have gotten comfortable with their present situation, excepting the fact that they may be stuck in this place forever, Thomas decides to take risks and challenge the society, doing everything he can to find a way to escape. The arrival of Thomas brings a whole new level of drama and danger to the Glader’s situation. Strange things begin to happen; the maze begins to act in ways that it never has before, boys start to die, and strangest of all; a girl arrives from the elevator with a note that reads ‘She’s the last one ever.’

It seems to be a race against time and danger now for The Gladers, led by Thomas. The movie will leave you guessing what could happen next and trying to unravel the mystery of the maze. Along with suspense and mystery, “The Maze Runner” has notes of drama as well as light-hearted humor brought about by the dynamic characters including Chuck played by Blake Cooper, Newt played by Thomas Sangster, Teresa played by Kaya Scodelario and Gally played by Will Poulter.

Since the movie is part of a three-part series, the ending leaves the viewer very confused, but also eager to find out what will happen in the next installment. Could “The Maze Runner” be the next “Hunger Games” or “Twilight Saga”? Quite possibly. It has all the elements to be the next young adult hit, and the cliffhanger ending ensures that you will be coming back for more after seeing the first film.
