Miguel De Cervantes sums up the golden rule for stage managers saying “To be prepared is half the battle.” When you search for “What does a stage manager need?” all of the results that come up on the internet are professional stage managers from professional theaters giving advice. Unfortunately, high school stage managers probably don’t have the space nor the budget for a full-on kit. Here are eight must-haves for every good stage manager:

1. Pencils

Pencils are a must-have for writing notes and other important information. Erasers and lead refills for mechanical pencils are also a must-have.

2. Small flashlight

In the dark depths of the wings, it’s important to see to avoid tripping and falling, or so that you can follow along in the script for cues.

3. Highlighters

Sometimes you need to draw your attention to a certain part of the script or notes. Occasionally you just need something bright that screams “Look at me!”

4. Pocket screwdriver

Last minute set repairs are a big problem if you’re not prepared. If you don’t have something to tighten a screw or to pry out a staple, your whole set could go down in flames.

5. Small stapler

If your papers fall apart, your whole show could fall apart, too. If you really need your papers to stay together, a paper clip just won’t cut it. Staples are the only way to go.

6. Flash drive with a distinctive key chain

Carrying around a backup of your files is a must. Adding a distinctive keychain identifies it as yours and ensures it will be returned if you ever lose it.

7. Pencil sharpener

Pencils are no use without a sharpener, and if you don’t have one when your pencil breaks, you may encounter some serious issues without an immediate solution.

8. Hair ties

When actors and actresses run around backstage screaming “Who has a hair tie?!” you want to be able to resolve that situation quickly.
