The bittersweet albums of Olivia Rodrigo

Roughly two and a half years after “Sour” was released, Olivia Rodrigo blessed her fans with her second album “Guts.”

Olivia Rodrigo came out with her second album, “Guts,” on Sept. 8, 2023, and has been receiving mixed reviews. “Guts” has been placed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Top Albums Chart within 12 days of its release. Rodrigo later announced her “Guts” world tour and it is driving fans insane.

Her first album “Sour,” was released on May 21, 2021, which blossomed into a huge hit. The album was nominated for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and had four more nominations for the Grammy Awards. The first song released off of the album was “Drivers License” which was released during COVID-19, on Jan. 8, 2021.

As soon as “Sour” came out, the album was rumored to be about Actor Joshua Bassett since Rodrigo and him were rumored to be dating which was quickly shut down by Rodrigo.

Since I was little, I have watched Rodrigo on many different shows and movies, so when I saw that she had released a brand new album, I was looking forward to hearing her songs for the first time ever.

When I first listened to “Sour”, my favorite song was “1 step forward, 3 steps back”. The album creates a “sad breakup” and a “revenge” vibe. The whole album goes through the stages of a failed romance, but with gut-wrenching songs that are bittersweet such as, “brutal”, “good 4 u” and “traitor”.

The day “Guts” came out, I was extremely excited to listen to it right away. My favorite song is “lacy”. This album still has a sad romance story behind it, however,  the songs have more of a 90’s rock feel since most of the songs are upbeat and exciting. Rodrigo is seriously upping her game in the music industry.

Another song that stuck out to me was “teenage dream”. This song talks about not getting the teenage dream she wants and how sorry she is for being a “disappointment.” Overall, her album is amazing and shows her growth in the music industry, showing that she will be able to do many astonishing things in the future.

These albums connect in many ways, talking about romance, regret and revenge. But on the other hand, her songwriting skills have improved once again.

Overall, her first album “Sour” has been my favorite since it was released, and “Guts” is a close second. Hopefully, fans will hear different genres of music from Rodrigo in the future. With Rodrigo already winning many awards and breaking records, she is bound to have a successful career in the future.
