Hearts are pounding, mouths are breathing, feet are moving and passion fills the air when junior Alexandria Knight laces up her track shoes. Since the 6th grade, Knight has found herself running with the wind.

“I run track because I told myself that if I took track to the next level in high school, I would take it to my senior year,” Knight said. “I love my team, and I can’t imagine myself being anywhere else but the track.”

Track consists of many foot racing events including: sprints, middle to long distance, hurdles and relays, all of these events are won by the athlete with the fastest time. The jumping and throwing events: long and high jump, pole vaulting, shotput and discus, these events are won by the athletes that achieves the greatest height or distance. Knight runs the 4×800 meter relay which consists of a team comprised of four runners, in which each runnner completes 800 meters or two laps on a standard 400 meter track.

“My goal this season is to get down to a two-minutes, forty-second half-mile time,” Knight said.

Track and field athletes must prepare for their events way before reaching the starting line. Whether it’s on the track or in the weight room, Knight plans to surpass her past accomplishments by taking her game to the next level.

“A regular training day is either an over distance day and/or a workout,” Knight said. “Over distance days for mid-distance runners usually consists of three to four miles followed by a workout involving a series of 200 meter sprints.

According to Knight, she will not take track to the collegiate level, however, running will remain a part of her life forever. Nothing will ever be able to exceed the memories she has made as a Sequoit runner.

“My favorite memory about running track would have to be from my freshmen year,”Knight said. “I remember my friend, Gracie Mateja and I, cheering and yelling so loud for our friend as he crossed the finish line in first place.”
