Every so often, there seems to be a new digital trend that the world flocks to. This year, it’s Wordle. Wordle is an online game where the player has six tries to guess a five-letter word, and the program tells the player which letters are correct or incorrect. Yellow tiles mean that the letter is in the word, but in the wrong place, and green tiles mean the letter is in the correct place. A simple twist; there is only one word a day, once the game is over, players must wait until the next day to get a new word.

According to Sky News, the game was released by Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2021. The game was originally created for his partner, Palak Shah.

After its immense takeoff, the game was sold to The New York Times for a heavy seven-figure sum, where it currently resides. Wordle continues to have millions of players tune in once a day to guess the word.

“I think if you could do multiple a day, not as many people would hop on the trend, because it’s more fun to have one word a day,” senior Lianna Corley said.

Some have been playing the game since the start, and it has not gotten old. The addictive nature of the game keeps players coming back every single day.

“I complete my Wordle at 5:30 a.m. every morning,” math teacher William Zambole said. “When I wake up, it’s the first thing I do.”

Wordle has taken the world by storm, and there are no signs of it slowing down. Tune in to www.nytimes.com to get the daily word.
