At 7:20 in the morning, Akayed Ullah detonated a pipe bomb that was attached to his body in the subway tunnel of Times Square after exiting a Port Authority bus he had taken into the city from Brooklyn.

The explosion inflicted five people with minor injuries while Ullah is said to be seriously injured with lacerations and burns to his hands and abdomen. When Ullah detonated his device, the explosive chemical inside the bomb ignited but the pipe itself did not explode, therefore lessening the impact that could have shaken New York City. After Ullah was taken into custody, he pledged his allegiance to ISIS; he then said this act of violence was in reaction of the “incursion into Gaza,” but did not specify the exact incursion.

CNN reporter Ray Sanchez and Joe Sterling elaborated on the recent events that have been transpiring in Gaza.

“Israel launched airstrikes this weekend against what it said were Hamas targets in Gaza after several rockets were fired out of Gaza toward Israel. This came amid widespread protests over President Trump’s move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

Authorities continue to investigate Ullah and his family. Ullah has been charged with bombing in a public space, providing support for the Islamic State, destruction of property by fire or explosions, use of a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence and the use of a weapon of mass destruction.
