Recently the boys cross country team competed at Lakes Community High School for the conference championship. The boys cross country team ran very well as they ended the meet with three all-conference runners.

There were very high expectations for some of the athletes going into this race. Junior runner Charlie Smith won the all-conference title with a first-place finish.

“Placing first at the conference meet was very exciting,” Smith said. “Being the first meet of the postseason, it’s always nice to get a win. I kind of knew going into the race that the finish would be down to just a couple of other guys. My race plan was to just draft off of those other guys until the end. With about a quarter mile left, I was feeling smooth and made a surge on the other guys. It was a very sloppy course as well, which made the race more fun. It is also a reason why my race plan wasn’t just to go all out from the start.”

Senior Michael Volkmar also is a highly recognized runner, as he placed third in the conference. Even though Volkmar ran a great race, he hasn’t accomplished all of his goals yet this season.

“I feel great knowing I am an all-conference runner,” Volkmar said. “We have regionals coming up and we are looking to qualify not only as individuals but as a team for the state race.”

Lucas Baronello also made all-conference with a 17th place finish which boosted the team’s overall score.

With all of these runners making all-conference, the varsity cross country team placed second in conference. Make sure to support the Sequoits in their next race for sectionals at Emricson Park in Woodstock, Illinois.
