After more than 100 years of beloved princesses, Disney recently introduced the first ever Latina princess.

Disney announced Elena of Avalor as the newest princess in early 2015; she is set to debut in 2016.

Many Disney fans were thrilled about the continuing diversity of Disney’s princesses.

Junior Jasmine DeLara said, “I love Disney and all they do and I’m excited to see the Latin-influenced journey [Elena] takes.”

Elena’s big debut will be the children’s show, Sofia the First. According to Disney, after Elena stars on this show she is going to have her own spin off series.

Junior Mercedes Lima said, “It’s interesting to see Disney become more diverse. It’s also beneficial to others who don’t know much about Latin culture.”

How will the new princess make her debut on Disney television?

Elena is trapped in Sofia’s (of Sofia the First) amulet by a sorcerer when trying to save her sister, Shuriki. After Sofia discovers Elena, she learns more about the Latin culture and ethnicity.

The voice of Elena of Avalor is said to be Aimee Carreo from the Dominican Republic, who currently stars on the ABC show, Young and Hungry.

A Latina princess is long overdue and Princess Elena is said to be a confident and compassionate teenager. The new release will be a great way to display Latin culture to Disney’s audience.
