On Sept. 23, the Antioch varsity field hockey team took on the St. Viator Lions. The Sequoits came out on top with a victory of 9-0, leading them with a new record of 8-4.
Head coach Terry Dewing started challenging the team to have one personal and one team goal for every game. This worked out for the team as they came out strong from the start, scoring a goal in the first two minutes. This has been a goal Dewing challenged the girls with all season, and not only did they do it in the first quarter but also in the second quarter.
The Sequoits’ offense in the game was unstoppable, and were able to put in five goals by halftime. Freshman Scarlett Carroll was untouchable with her dribbling and dodging around players throughout the whole game. The top scores of today’s game were freshman Alaina Tan and sophomore Kate Sheehan, both having two goals.
The defense worked hard as well with moving the ball up the field and breaking down the game when needed. Senior Macie Volkmar stepped up and put her personal and team goals into action from the start.
“My personal goal for today’s game was to break down my steps on defense to slow down the defense; my team goal for today’s game was to play the small game,” Volkmar said.
This game has two very important goals and highlights, as these two people had their first varsity goals today. Sheehan and junior Katie Smith. They both put in the work all game to make it possible and help their team pull out the victory.
“I would say my highlight of today’s game was definitely scoring my first two goals on varsity,” Sheehan said.
The Sequoits have a bright rest of their season left and are looking forward to their upcoming weeks of games. Come support them on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the stadium for senior night while they take on Stevenson down at the stadium.
