First Date Jitters

The “first date jitters” are common in everyone; we all aim to impress, but anything off this platter should be un-ordered.

So you finally got that hot guy from the gym to ask you out, or the courage to ask that girl from bio for her number. First date jitters are inevitable, and if you’re a girl, the stereotypical first date salad hinders in the back of your mind; if you’re a guy, there’s the constant pressure of providing a “gentleman’s vibe”, and taking a break from the typical barbecue wings. If you suffer from the common nerves of a first date in the endeavor to impress, (because everyone does), here’s a list of foods to not order on a first date.

1). Spaghetti and meatballs: “It can get really sloppy and messy, and you might look immature to your date,” said sophomore Kevin McLemore.

2). Barbecue ribs and wings: There’s a reason these things come with a towelette, and they require a lot of manhandling, and your face might receive a barbecue blanket. Try steak in liu. Although it’s on the pricey side, it’s cleaner and you can satisfy your meat cravings, and look classy doing so.

3). Leafy Salads: Whoever told girls that it’s more attractive to get a salad on a date was wrong. Secondly, leafs can get in your teeth and is not an attractive look, try grilled vegetables for an alternative. Additional

4). Beans: “Beans, beans, beans, the musical fruit.” Anything with beans probably tastes just as good without them.

5). Spicy foods: If you can handle it, then good for you, but if you can’t, then just stick to what you know.

6). Onions or garlic: This should be a given. It tastes good, but it doesn’t smell good, especially if you’re going to try and make a move.

7).  Corn on the cob: It might be cute for the first two bites, but have fun picking your teeth the rest of the night. An alternate could be corn chowder; if you really want corn, then try a side that require utensils.

8). Soup: Let’s avoid the slurps, lip-smacking and spills.

9). Whole lobster or crab: If it’s looking at you, it’s probably looking at your date too. Try fish fillets, or something that doesn’t have eyes.

10). Appetizers or the kids menu: Don’t be shy! Be yourself. It’s okay to indulge.
“I’d also bring a girl flowers on a date. It’s a mature and appropriate thing to do,” said McLemore.
