Last week, AP Physics C took campaigning to a whole new level. In order to determine which of concepts in physics is the most important, physics teacher Vasilij Acic held a mock election which ended with the student body voting on which concept they thought to be best.

The class formed five separate teams for each of the concepts: Newton’s Laws, Gravity 2k16 (gravitation), Osc-Elation (oscillation), Kinematics and Conservation Nation (Laws of Conservation). From there, each of the teams campaigned for their concept. They each had a catchy slogan, for example the slogan for Osc-Elation was “Do the Wave”, and the slogan for Gravity 2k16 was “Feel the Pull”.

Each of the candidates created twitter pages to rally support and display videos of other teachers giving their support. Some teachers had fun with this, endorsing one group at first, and then switching their vote at the last moment.

ACHS social studies teacher Amy Skonberg tweeted, “Got slammed into the wall by Chromebook cart inertia.  Considering changing my vote from @OfficialNewtonL to @Gravitation2k16 #PhysElect16”.

Much like a real election, candidates provided the public with entertainment by mudslinging. Kinematics tweeted, “If @Gravitation2k16 only purpose in life is to pull objects together, why are they struggling so much to pull in votes? #PhysElect16”, while Newton’s Laws tweeted, “The only thing I have in common with @ConservationNRG is our aspect of law… but other than that? Can you say ‘trash’? #PhysElect16”.

On Friday, Acic sent out a poll to staff and students where they could cast their vote, and Newton’s Laws won by a wide margin of 46.8%. ACHS senior and member of Newton’s Laws Nathan Borries said, “After all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears, we came out with the ‘W’.”
