In the United States, it is increasingly common to get rid of what American’s don’t want or need anymore. According to Norman Rockwell, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” And that is the motto Antioch Community High School senior Logan Bouker is following this upcoming week.

Bouker started a drive to collect an everyday necessity: shoes. What some may think is a fashion statement, for less privileged people around the world it is important for their survival and even education. Many places in the world have dangerous areas to walk that are even worse when people have to go barefoot. Many diseases and parasites are contracted by walking places barefoot. A cut or open wound can lead to horrific infections and death.

Schools in places like South Africa, as a rule, will not let children in if they do not have shoes. Parents will share shoes between themselves and their children so they can receive what many take for granted, an education.

That’s why Bouker has started a two-week-long shoe drive, to help out those in need. Starting this Monday, Sept. 22, anyone can bring in a pair of shoes to donate to this cause. It is also possible to bring a pair of shoes to the ACHS vs. Mundelein football game to receive free admission.

Bouker would like to see how many pairs ACHS and the Antioch community can donate to help out the less privileged of our world.
