The Cold Affects

The cold changes sports, both in how athletes play and the affects on the sport.

During early spring games, sports that are played outside have a difficult time with the weather; especially the cold. The cold tends to affect baseball especially because when baseball is played it is harder to stay warm because there is less movement compared to other sports.

In baseball, they cannot wear gloves because they have to throw with one hand and put a mitt on the other. Also, they cannot wear a lot of layers because they want as much as their normal motion as they can while they are either hitting or throwing. Baseball players don’t move around as much like other sports; making it harder to warm up.

The cold will affect other aspects of the game such as hitting. The cold affects the bat by either making it break or not having the ball go as far, with aluminum and composite bats, those bats are susceptible to breaking. Also, the ball doesn’t go as far because the air is more dense and causes the ball not to travel as far; resulting in athletes not swinging as hard because if they do not hit the ball just right, the bat vibrates and “stings” the hand. Although it does not affect everyone in the same way.

“It changes the way I warm up, so it doesn’t significantly change the way I hit or pitch,” junior Nick Sheren said.

There is a lot of ways that the cold affects sports, and baseball is one of the top ones that suffer. It changes the game and it is harder to adapt to the weather.
