The Magnificent Mags

Over the past week, Nike announced an opportunity to win their newest pair of Nike Mag shoes, grabbing the attention of sneakerheads from all corners of the globe.

Nike Mag shoes were originally created to mimic the astronaut-like shoes seen in Back to the Future, a film from the 80s. Now, six years after the first release of Mags, Nike has announced the release of their newest version: Nike HyperAdapt 1.0. These shoes are a spin off of the original Mags, however their technology is far superior. Nike Hyperadapts are designed to fit an athlete’s foot as they move. With the incredible technology and intricate design, they are worth over $104,000.

“I personally don’t think that the Mags are worth $100,000,” senior Connor Byczek said. “I don’t like the design or color.” There are only 89 pairs available globally, making the Hyperadapts in high demand. Senior Patrick Schoenfelder has a different opinion than Byczek on the new Mags. “I wish they were handing out more than 89 pairs; they are awesome,” Schoenfelder said.

From October 4 until October 11, tickets to enter a drawing for the 2016 version of Nike Mags could be purchased for $10. There was no limit on how many tickets could be purchased, meaning this drawing had the potential to rack in millions. Instead of taking the profit for themselves, Nike chose to use the money for a good cause. The profit was directly donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.

In 2011, Nike did a similar drawing. In just over a week, they raised over $10 million for Parkinson’s research. Not only are these shoes in high demand, but they are raising awareness for a great cause. In the drawing done this past week, Nike was projected to raise more than their previous record of $10 million. The 89 lucky winners of the new Nike Hyperadapts were announced on October 17.
