With sideline cheer coming to an end, tryouts for competitive cheer will begin on Oct. 24. After receiving third in the state last season, Sequoits expect even better results than last year.

For varsity tryouts this season, coaches are mainly looking for well-rounded athletes on top of the physical demands for the competitive team this year. Varsity head coach Amber Babin looks for well-rounded athletes both on the mat and off.

“They need to have the drive, determination, hard work, and to be accountable to not only themselves, but to their teammates,” Babin said.

More preparation goes into the competitive season compared to the sideline; the competition offers more rigorous objectives.

“I always want to make sure I’m ready with the skills I want to try out with,” sophomore Jennifer Serifov said. “I make sure I am [physically] prepared and mentally prepared try out and give it my all.”

The Sequoits thrive in stunting and tumbling. Sideline season prepares these athletes for competition because it is more practice with intensive skills. Some girls get even more preparation by participating in weekly flexibility groups, weightlifting and numerous camps over the summer.

Cheer, especially during competition season, can become very challenging mentally. Before COVID-19, Babin would bring in a sports psychologist to talk to her cheerleaders to help them reflect and set goals.

“He really helps us figure out our strengths and weaknesses not just physically, but also mentally,” Babin said. “Working to be champion minded, because in our program, that is the ultimate goal.”

The Antioch varsity cheer team works hard daily to reach their high standards and work hard. As football season is coming to a close, competition season is in full swing.

Tryouts for competition season will be held in the auxiliary gym on Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. Those trying out must wear all black with a cheer bow and have a physical on file with the athletic office to try out.
