Wrestling Sequoits Take Over Sectionals

The wrestling Sequoits fight for a chance to go to the state tournament.

The varsity wrestling Sequoits had an eventful weekend at sectionals that were hosted at Grayslake Central on Saturday, February 10.

The team came back with four individual state qualifiers. The four wrestlers that made it to state are sophomores Niall Schoenfelder, Daniel McPherson and Alex Barbarise who was the sectionals champion in the 113 pound weight class. The fourth qualifier was junior Jackie Sistrunk.

“Being a sectional champion feels amazing, I’ve been working hard all year and it’s paying off,” Barbarise said.

Other schools that attended the tournament were Lakes, Grayslake North, Wauconda and more.

Due to the fact that all of the other wrestlers from the other schools were at the same level compared to the Sequoits, the boys were competitive throughout the tournament fighting for their spot at state.

“I am looking forward to having another shot at getting on the podium,” Barbarise said. “The number one goal has always been to be one of the best so I’m hoping to accomplish that in Champaign.”

The team as a whole is now looking forward to team sectionals where they will have the opportunity to potentially have the whole Sequoit wrestling team go out to state and compete as a team. The team sectional tournament is on Tuesday, February 20. The boys are excited to compete at team sectionals because for some, this is the last chance that they have to go to state and to work together as a team.
