1. EMAIL FROM ADMINISTRATION SPARKS FRUSTRATION

The message explains new rules for school dances and reminds students of dress code rules. Students are upset with the dancing rules after years of little change from the administration, and a presentation reminding students of the dress code is seen as sexist by many students. The administration held meetings with all interested students during lunch hours on Thursday to discuss the email.

2. ZIKA VIRUS SCARES WORLD

The World Health Organization may declare a public health emergency after a surprising increase in the number of Zika cases in the past year. The disease is transmitted via a mosquito common in the Americas. Symptoms of the disease are not often found in the carrier, but the children of infected pregnant women are often found to have abnormally small heads.

3. DANCE TAKES 11TH AT STATE

The girls dance team finished their season strong Friday, coming in 11th of the top 30 teams in the state. The team finished just 0.14 points behind 10th place Deerfield High School, who moved on to Saturday’s finals with the other top ten teams in the 2A division.

4. POLITICAL POWERHOUSES PREPARE FOR IOWA

The first primary votes for President of the United States will be cast on Monday in Iowa, and many candidates are doing what they can to sway voters. A GOP debate was held on Thursday night, which Republican front-runner Donald Trump opted out of due to a dispute with Fox News. CNN’s town hall hosted the Democratic hopefuls on Monday; Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton locked in a dead heat for the nomination.

5. LADY SEQUOITS BEAT LAKES, WIN DIVISION TITLE

The girls basketball team beat crosstown rival Lakes Community High School 63-36 on Friday night. The team clinched the Prairie Division with the win. Junior Amy Reiser returned from a back injury with eight points, while senior Alexis Duehr scored 20 and junior Ashley Reiser had 13.

6. LEADER OF OREGON MILITIA ARRESTED, ONE KILLED

Four members of the militia remain in the wildlife refuge they have been occupying for 28 days. Seven more men were arrested on Tuesday, including leader Ammon Bundy. LaVoy Finicum, a prominent group member, was killed during the arrest. Bundy is requesting the remaining four to leave peacefully to avoid more casualties.

7. CHEER QUALIFIES FOR STATE

The cheer team went to Lake Zurich High School on Saturday to compete in the IHSA Sectional. The team took third in the medium team division, which locks them into a spot at state next weekend in Bloomington alongside the other top five teams.

8. THREE ESCAPEES RECAPTURED IN CALIFORNIA

The three inmates escaped from maximum security prison in Santa Ana on January 22. One escapee turned himself in on Friday, when he guided police to San Francisco. The two remaining escapees traveled north to San Francisco, where a police chase ensued Saturday. Both men were captured and possessed a stolen van and many rounds of ammunition.

9. SEQUOITS TAKE OVER BUFFALO WILD WINGS

Students, staff, family and friends all participated in the first night of Buffalo Wild Wings’ “Spirit Night 2016” on Thursday. Antioch is competing against four other local schools to raise the most money for Sequoit Pride, the school’s parent booster club. Senior Tyler Wilkins won the wing eating competition against students and staff, the highlight of the night.

10. MALAYSIA MAY HAVE LOST BILLIONS

A fund for new large developments created in 2009 continues to face massive troubles. The fund, called 1MDB, was discovered to be in $11 billion of debt last year. Switzerland’s attorney general claims that various individuals and companies have misplaced $4 billion.
