1. MANNING GOES OUT IN STYLE

The Denver Broncos’ defense was able to stifle Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl Sunday night. Denver beat Carolina 24-10 in what is widely believed to have been Peyton Manning‘s last game.

2. CHEER TAKES ON STATE

The team took their State walk through the school Thursday afternoon before heading to Bloomington. They performed Friday afternoon, taking 17th of 25 competing teams.

3. PHARMA EXEC FACES CONGRESS

Drug entrepreneur Martin Shkreli came before a Congressional committee on Thursday for questioning. Shkreli’s accomplishments include buying the company behind a life-saving HIV drug and hiking the price by over 5,000%, as well as buying the only copy of the newest Wu-Tang Clan album for $2 million.

4. HOLE BLOWN IN SIDE OF SOMALI PLANE

A Daallo Airlines flight to Djibouti performed an emergency landing on Tuesday after a hole was blown in the side of the plane. The Somali government has stated the hole was from a bomb. One was killed and two were injured in the apparent attack. No organization has taken responsibility.

5. GIRLS BASKETBALL OUTLASTS GRANT

The team fought to the wire through two overtimes, taking home a 71-69 win against the Bulldogs. Senior Madalyn Murillo scored a layup as time expired to give the Lady Sequoits a win. The girls finished regular season conference play undefeated with the win. Earlier in the week, senior Alexis Duehr was named an MVP by the Daily Herald.

6. CRANE TOPPLES IN NEW YORK

The crane came down in TriBeCa on Friday morning while lowering to avoid high winds. One man was killed, and three were injured. The 565-foot-tall crane fell down Worth Street and spanned longer than an entire block after falling.

7. WRESTLING ROLLS THROUGH REGIONALS

Sequoit wrestling took home the Regional Championship on Saturday at home. Antioch had four regional champions, including seniors Nathan Dlugopolski and Jacob Gross, and juniors Patrick Schoenfelder and George Bessette.

8. CLINTON, CRUZ WIN FIRST VOTES

Monday’s Iowa caucuses left Ted Cruz in the lead for the Republican nomination for president. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton edged out the opposition to win the state. Many say the real winners on Monday were other faces: Democrat Bernie Sanders has gained ground and finished 0.3% behind Clinton, while Republican Marco Rubio jumped to third place.

9. LARGE EARTHQUAKE HITS TAIWAN

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake hit Taiwan on Saturday morning. At least 14 were killed and 484 injured during the quake. Seven buildings were damaged, including a collapsed residential building where many of the casualties occurred.

10. CARS FALL INTO LAKE GENEVA

At least a dozen car owners fell prey to the laws of physics after the ice under their parked vehicles melted. The cars were reportedly all there for Lake Geneva’s Winterfest and were dodging the town’s busy parking lots when the afternoon sun heated the ice past its melting point.
