Alternate Ending at Writers Week 2018

Antioch students and staff encountered an unconventional yet interesting storytelling method in Alternate Ending.

During the “Unconventional Storytelling” day of Writers Week, personalities Rob and Carrie from the podcast Alternate Ending came to Antioch and taught students and staff about the idea behind and the work that goes into their project.

A site that contains both articles and multi-hour podcasts of Rob, Carrie, and a third member, Tim, Alternate Ending is a movie review platform on which the three give their opinions on the films.

Their review criteria varies between the three. Tim, the so-called critic of the three, currently in film school, focuses more on the actual makeup of the film: lighting, effects, symbolism, things like that. Carrie, the “Casual Movie Goer,” focuses less on the technical aspect and more on her impressions of the film. Rob, the self-described “Film School Dropout,” stimulates conversation and provides an excellent balance throughout the three. The diversity between them provides excellent conversation and a good balance of technical and casual.

According to their website:

“[Alternate Ending] isn’t a site for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a site for people who can’t get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a site for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a site for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It’s a site that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It’s a site about discovering good movies… one bad movie at a time.”

Students seemed to genuinely enjoy the discussion of this unconventional method of storytelling.

“It was very different from what we listened to in the past and it was a good change,” junior AnLi Butler said.

All in all, Alternate Ending provided an entertaining look into the world of storytelling for ACHS.
