Bacon Bites Back

Trying new things isn’t always easy–especially when it comes to picky eaters.

Being a picky eater since I was a child, I have grown up eating chicken nuggets, mac and cheese and corn dogs. Since I’m apprehensive about trying new foods, I didn’t decide what I was going to try. I was going to let fate decide for me. Since my parents usually eat something different than me for dinner because I usually do not like what they’re having, I decided I was going to join them for dinner tonight. I would be eating whatever they put on the table.

I came home at 5:30pm and as soon as I walked into the door the smell hit me. I knew that tonight I would be trying bacon.

Bacon is a food that I have always been reluctant to try. I’ve never liked the smell or look of it, so I never felt the urge to try it.

My dad had prepared BLTs. Since I have also never had lettuce or tomatoes, I decided I would only have the bacon. I placed two strips of bacon on my plate accompanied by my usual chicken nuggets and mac and cheese.

As weird as it may sound, the thought of eating bacon made me nervous. I didn’t want to become sick from eating it. The smell already unsettled my stomach so I couldn’t begin to imagine the taste.

About 15 minutes after placing my strips of bacon on my plate I finally built up the courage to try a piece. I bit into the first strip, taking off a decent size bite. It was crunchy and greasy. I was unsettled by it. Reluctantly, I took another bite to fully process whether or not I liked it.

It tasted fatty and I didn’t like the greasy aspect either. I decided bacon wasn’t a food I liked. I didn’t see why there is so much hype about bacon. I didn’t find it appealing, but nonetheless I still didn’t see anything miraculous about bacon. Maybe I’ll consider trying it again in the future, but for now, I don’t see it as something I’ll be placing onto my plate of foods I like anytime soon.
