The road to state has come to an end for the girls varsity basketball team.

A tough battle was fought Tuesday evening against Saint Viator, ending in a loss at 58-45 for our Lady Sequoits.

As the first quarter ended, the Sequoit’s energy was radiating off the court, with a score of 18-5 going into the second.

The second quarter was filled with quick counterattacks and rebounds from our offense to keep the lead at 29-19.

The offense began to slow down and our defense had to put in more work, but maintaining the winning score of 38-33 for the Sequoits at the end of the third quarter.

The game took a disappointing turn as the Saint Viator Lions found momentum in their game for the final quarter; outplaying our defense and creating struggles for our offense to tie up the game. The ending score was 58-45; sending Saint Viator to the Sectional final and sending the Sequoits to the end of their season.

Senior Alexis Duehr created many chances for our offense throughout the game.

“The team broke down when we started getting into foul trouble. It brought down the team’s momentum greatly, and it’s hard to come back once the other team is up and going,” said Duehr. “We started off strongly, just like we did against Marian on Friday. We just couldn’t finish this one out.”

Junior Ashley Reiser has one last season as an Antioch Sequoit basketball player.

“We broke down because we could not put the ball in the hoop. We had multiple opportunities and couldn’t finish, and Saint Viator would constantly finish the run with a bucket,” said Reiser. “We could not stop their best player, so that was a huge factor contributing to the loss.”

This season has been a very successful one for the girls and we thank our seniors for their dedication and hard work.
