How to: Interesting Portraits

Everyone loves a good picture of themselves, whether it be a reminder of a fun day or just a good representation of their personality. However, not all photos are created equal. There are several ways to spice up your portrait photos– here are just a few ways to do so.

  1. Add string lights.
  2. Repurpose your holiday string lights by using them to take fun and festive photos. Try laying the majority of the lights around yourself or a friend and have the photographer hold one end of the lights in front of the camera lens to create a line of blurred lights leading to the subject.
  3. Grab some props.
  4. Add some personality to the photo by grabbing a few props that help enhance your photo. Props could be anything from an umbrella to a vintage camera. Have some fun with the photo shoot and allow yourself to let your personality shine through with the help of props.
  5. Change up the background.
  6. A change of scenery can aid in more than just creating cool photos. However, try stepping outside to take your portraits; not only will it allow for a more interesting background but it will also give you more natural and even lighting which will make for beautiful portraits.
  7. Switch outfits.Clothes are an easy way to express personality and mood, so picking the right outfit can be crucial for the tone of the photos. Try slipping into solid colors for a simple yet sophisticated portrait and bright fun colors for a more energetic and youthful look. Also consider picking a color scheme for family or couple photos to ensure that outfits don’t clash.
  8. Play with angles.

Not all portraits have to look like a school photo. Play with angles when taking photos; climb up on something or step closer to the subject to add interest. Also, try telling your subject to turn their shoulders about 45 degrees from the camera for a more flattering photo. If you happen to be near an interesting wall, stand against the wall with your subject and photograph along it.
