Movie Review: Birds of Prey The Emancipation of Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie returns for a solo film taking the role of Harley Quinn to heart as she makes the DC character light up on the screen and truly show her bad side.

Birds of Prey takes a new look at the character Harley Quinn, who has only been featured in one other DC film, Suicide Squad. Taking that role she has earned a solo film and she takes full control of her new character.

The character Harley Quinn has been in existence for 27 years; Quinn has just received her first movie. The newest DC film, Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn, follows the story of the Joker and Harley Quinn’s horrible break up. Quinn ends up losing the protection of the Joker, leaving her with no choice but to protect herself on her own.

Throughout the movie, viewers meet many of Harley Quinn’s enemies, one of them being the Black Mask. Black Mask is an older character in the DC franchise who was first introduced in August of 1985 in the Batman comics. Since then the villain has been featured in 3 films and for the first time,  hit the big screens. The Black Mask is the main villain of the film and Harley Quinn’s main enemy. Her goal throughout the entire film is based around the feud between the two of them.

The movie follows the story of Harley Quinn and her new life no longer being protected by the Joker. Quinn is pursued by every person she has ever wronged. As each person attempted to pursue her, Quinn was later captured by the Black Mask and his men. Meanwhile, a girl pickpockets a very valuable diamond belonging to the wealthy Gotham family, killed by the Black Mask. This pickpocket stole it from the Black Mask and Harley Quinn cuts a deal with Black Mask. To save her life, Quinn will steal the diamond back for him. Quinn ends up finding the girl and no longer wants to turn her in. In order to save the girl, Quinn finds a group of girls or “The Birds of Prey.” They help save the girls life from the Black Mask by killing him and his men.

For me, this movie was good, but it was not amazing or out of this world movie. The fight scenes and action scenes were very good, and I enjoyed watching them a lot. Actress Margot Robbie was fantastic, and Robbie has taken Harley Quinn to heart in this new film. Something I did not enjoy was the actual story line of the movie. I thought it was a very odd and random way to write a movie, which I did not enjoy. Besides the storyline of the movie, I thought all the other parts of it were great, the filming of the movie was good as well. From a 1-10 rating, I would give this movie a rating of 5.5.
