Coming into high school as a freshman, many parents tell their children, “these 4 years go by fast, so make the most of them.” Kids often ignore this statement because they think that the next four years are going to be long and that the time will go by slowly. Then as a senior begins their last year of high school, they look back and realize that everyone was right about just how fast time flies by in high school.

For an athlete, the last season of a high school sport is something meaningful and special. They know that no matter what happens in the season, whether they play or not, their high school career is coming to an end. The final season for a senior is full of many lasting memories. For many, it is the last time playing the sport they have come to love since the start of high school. It is the last time being on a team with the friends that they have grown up with since elementary school. It is full of moments that, as an underclassmen, were taken for granted.

For senior Drew Porter, the last time ever playing football for the Sequoits is something special.

“I think that we can be special,” senior Drew Porter said. “I really think that I have seen the heart, you know, ever since the summer camps and all. I know that this could be the team that could really do it. I feel like this could be the year that we win the state title, but only if all of us as seniors all work together.”

Being on a good team can also motivate a senior to make the season one to remember. If it is the last season, then why not make it the best one yet? Coming out on top can be the icing on the cake for a senior’s last season and a great way to end a high school career. The best part of a winning season, or any win during the season, is when one looks around and they are with the friends that they have grown up with and have met throughout high school; the friends they have helped and who have helped them throughout the practices, games and entire seasons.

For some athletes, looking back on the last four years on their team brings back memories of when they first began as freshman. The traditions and rituals each team has are different, unique and given to each senior to carry out every year.

“I will miss the fun traditions our team does and making all the memories with them at our competitions and games,” senior Danielle Bay said. “It’s really sad because it’s been such a great experience to have these past four years and I’m going to miss it for sure.”

Sports in high school are an unforgettable and enjoyable experience that one will remember forever. It is a time where one makes many friendships, works as a team to achieve a goal and represents their school with pride. As high school comes to an end, it is fun to look back and remember the memories made on a high school team. Those will be moments that can be told to children in the future in hopes they have the same experience. Senior year goes by fast, and if one is involved in a sport it goes by much faster. Don’t take moments for granted because one will never know how much they miss it until it is over. High school is a time to live in the moment because in a snap of a finger, it will all just be a memory.
