The beginning of the season for the Antioch Community High School’s boys varsity soccer team started off rough with a 7-2 loss against Crystal Lake Central.

Within in the first forty minutes of the game, Crystal Lake Central scored seven goals. It took Antioch until the second half to come back to score their only two goals of the game.

“I really think getting the nerves out was the biggest issue in the first half,” said head coach Marni Polakow. “In the second half we played much better.”

Staying calm and collected was one of the hardest parts the team had to face during this game. Many members of the team were confident going into this game, but unfortunately the result was not as satisfying.

One of the senior captains, Jordan Keller, had some words to say about his confidence with the team.

“It seemed like we had a pretty good team coming off of practice, especially after the scrimmage against JV,” Keller said. “My confidence in the team was iffy at first, but after the second half we played much better. We calmed down and possessed a lot more.”

Varsity soccer is a very young group of players this season, but Polakow is confident with the younger team members and surprised by how many of them played in this game.

“Peter Boeh surprised us,;we were not expecting him to give us what he gave us,” Polakow said. “We were really impressed because of what we got out of a sophomore who we didn’t even know we were going to have; that was huge.”

Polakow was impressed by four-year varsity senior and team captain Lucas Semitka.

“At half time I felt we really needed to work on pressuring the ball and possessing and if we did, then we would have a successful second half, and we did that,” said Semitka.

Semitka has big goals set for this season and for himself. “As a team, it is our goal to win regionals, of course,” said Semitka. “Personally, I would like to score about 15 goals this season.”

The varsity soccer team faced some hardships within their first game of the season, but the team is very confident in improving and making this season a successful one.
