Junior Mikey Volkmar takes on a Wauconda wrestler December 1 in their dual meet.

The Antioch varsity wrestling team traveled to Wauconda on Friday, December 1. Going into the meet the team had high hopes of ending with a victory.

“Going into it, we all felt confident,” junior captain Mikey Volkmar said. “But we knew Wauconda was going to have some tough wrestlers.”

With pins from freshman Chad Cowart at 160 pounds, sophomore Alex Barbarise at 113 pounds, and junior Jackie Sistrunk, things were looking up for the Sequoits towards the end of the dual but were unable to clinch the victory, falling to the Bulldogs 36-31. Even though ultimately ending the conference meet with a loss, the real goal, was to perform well during the upcoming quad meet.

On Saturday, December 2, the Sequoits took a trip to Maine South High School where they participated in a quad meet between Antioch, Maine South, Mundelein, and St. Patrick’s.

Antioch finished the meet with a record of 2-1 with wins over Mundelein and St. Patrick’s, but a loss to Maine South.

“Much like the day before,” Volkmar said. “We knew we were going to be facing very good opponents, but we all learned from the day prior and we were ready for anything.”

With so many possible distractions, the Sequoits were sure to always be beside the mat when a teammate was wrestling so that they could cheer them on and possibly help them out.

Go support your Sequoits as they take on Grant this Friday, December 8 at Grant Community High School.
