Antioch Students Prepare to “Checkmate”

Math teacher Jake House heads up new team for those interested in competitive chess.

In past years, the chess enthusiasts within the ACHS student body met in a club format, concentrating their matches against others in the group. However starting this year, they have announced their meeting as an official chess team.

”I would call it a success if we were just able to go and compete on the same level as some of the more established schools out there,” team adviser Jake House said.

Needing at least eight people on the team to be able to participate in a competition or chess tournament, several past members are announcing the want for more additions to the new chess team. In order to offer more details to interested students, House hosted an informational meeting on Thursday, September 1, where he explained the future endeavors of the planned team.

Despite the minute differences between chess club and chess team, those involved are expanding the awareness of this competitive game throughout the school by attempting to build a competition team.
