In Cushing, Oklahoma damage is shown from the Nov. 7th earthquake. The earthquake was reported as a magnitude of 5.0, that has resulted in a great deal of damage to the town.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey recorded a 5.0 magnitude earthquake near the city of Cushing. No injuries have been reported thus far, but evacuations were put into effect to ensure safety for residents from senior centers, schools and community buildings after dozens of buildings reported substantial damage throughout surrounding areas.

“I think that everyone should come together as a community and as a whole,”  Junior Amy Vazquez said. “They need to help rebuild the destruction and deal with future destructions too.”

The once 5.3 magnitude earthquake was soon lowered to 5.0, throwing additional, slight impact on Illinois, Iowa and Texas. According to LiveScience, there are 500,000 earthquakes reported each year, each noticeably felt around the world.

Cushing is home to one of the country’s most essential oil hubs. The companies in the rural area produce large amounts of oil that are sent all around the country, making the numerous earthquakes that occur near Cushing, Oklahoma even more intense, economically. No immediate signs of damage have been reported at the oil sights, but several wells have been shut down. Police have also shut down older parts of the city and the Cushing Public School District in order to preserve safety. Residents continue to watch out for aftershocks following Sunday’s earthquake, and begin repairs following the current damage in the oil-filled area.
