It’s officially November. Everywhere you go, you see Christmas decorations, commercials, and hear Christmas music, but is it too early? There has been an ongoing debate for years about whether the holiday cheer should start right after Halloween or wait until after Thanksgiving. Some people are very passionate about their answer to this question, but it tends to be a great debate.
For many, the holiday season focuses on long-standing family traditions. Some grew up waiting for the big Thanksgiving dinner to be over with so they could put up the tree. Others, however, were waiting for Halloween night to come to an end, so the holiday season could begin. With so many different traditions and perspectives, everyone seems to have their own idea of the “right” time for the holiday season to begin.
One side of this holiday debate believes that we should let Thanksgiving have its own spotlight before the Christmas chaos unravels. They believe that Thanksgiving should be celebrated without the interference of Christmas lights and music.
On the other hand, some people love the excitement of Christmas and want to start as early as possible. The comfort of the lights, the tree, and all the cozy decorations is what people look forward to year-round. These traditions hold a special place in people’s hearts; some just can’t get enough.

“I love the lights. I love the colors that are in Christmas decorations. I love all the different generations and styles of Christmas decorations,” English teacher Lindsay Edwardson said, “I think that’s why it’s my favorite holiday, is the decorating.”
Everyone has different experiences with the holiday season, which shape how they feel on this holiday debate.
“I just like the Christmas vibe,” senior Maya Ryan said, “But I can understand why you would wait until after Thanksgiving if you really love it.”
No matter when people decide to start celebrating, the Christmas spirit becomes nearly impossible to avoid as Dec. 25 approaches. The joy and excitement the holidays bring are all around, filling the months of Nov. and Dec. with an endless amount of Christmas joy. Ultimately, everyone’s love for the holiday season is truly what makes it the best time of year.
“Thanksgiving is kind of a Christmas teaser, so I feel like it’s all kind of put together in one,” Ryan said.
Though most people seem to believe Christmas should start as soon as November rolls around, it doesn’t matter which side of the debate is “correct”; it’s the joy of the holiday season that everyone should focus on. Spending time with family and friends is truly what makes the holiday season the best time of year for everyone.
