Sequoits start on a promising season

The Sequoit track and field teams secured a victory against Lakes in their season-opening meet.

On Thursday, Feb. 15, the Sequoit track team had a very promising start in their first meet of the indoor season against rival Lakes Community High School. As with many sports, it is always a bit of an unknown when it comes to the first meet of the season. Having a dual meet in place of an invite as the first meet allows athletes to ease back into the season. A dual meet also can be helpful because it provides a realistic spot of where athletes are at in their training, without facing the pressure of a high-caliber meet.

Starting with the girls, they defeated Lakes by a score of 62 to 46. The Sequoits started the meet off strong with wins in their first five running events, as well as wins in three out of five field events. There were numerous personal records for set the Sequoits in this meet, which is very impressive considering that it was the first meet of the season. Generally indoor track is slower than outdoor. The girls were led by sophomore Abby Fuesting, who won all three running events she was in and placed second in the triple jump as well.

Similar to the girls, the boys defeated the Eagles in dominating fashion by a score of 70 to 32. While the Sequoits had good placements in the distance and field events, they owned the sprints. Antioch had the top two finishers in the 60-meter dash and hurdles, the 200-meter, and the 400-meter. They also won both relays, topping the leaderboard in the 4×200 and 4×400 meter relays.

Both the girls and boys teams look strong entering the season, and they appear to be starting off right where they left off last year. The girls team is very balanced, as they return everyone from a strong distance group, which last year broke the school record in the 4×800 meter relay, and a group of very impressive sprinters. The boys are also in good shape, returning most of their runners from the school record 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 meter relay teams.

With this win, the Sequoits have started the season off on the right foot, and hope to carry that throughout their indoor season. Up next for the Sequoits, a coed JV meet on Friday, Feb. 23; however, the real star of the show is the first invitational on Saturday, Feb. 24. Here the boys will participate in one of the biggest indoor invitational meets in the state. Make sure to come out and support your running Sequoits as they hope to continue this great season.
