The player who steps up and demonstrates leadership skills both on and off the field is widely known as a captain. Captains can be found on any team in any form. What makes a good captain, is not only their ability to read different aspects of the game, but to command their team while doing so. Being a captain entails: possessing good qualities, that together make up someone who can lead a team through all the hardships, victories, and memories created.

 

  1. The best captains, are typically the hardest workers on the field. They invest themselves in everything that they do. Captains, lead by example. They know that their success simply depends on that of their team. The amount of effort one puts on the field, is the amount of success they will have as a team. Alone, we are strong. Together, we are unstoppable.
  2. The best captains, encourage their teammates. The best leaders, bring out the best in their teammates. Captains, are selfless, as a captain, a team-first-mindset is a must. There is no “i” in team because together, everyone achieves more.
  3. The best captains, show the most respect for the people around them. Leaders, not only show respect for themselves, but their coaches, teammates, and opponents.
  4. The best captains, are the brains of the team. A good leader has the ability to handle problems that may arise along with having a thorough knowledge of the game around them.
  5. The best captains, are athletes that are coachable. Leaders, see weaknesses as areas of improvement, and strengths as the building blocks to continually surpass past accomplishments. Criticism is used as a motivator, and compliments are their boosters. Failure is seen as your first attempt at learning. Failure does not come from falling, it is the result of not getting back up.
